22 www.worldnewspublishingfocus.org WAN-IFRA Bulletin NOvember/December 2013 Arab Free Press Forum set for 24-26 November in Tunisia The sixth edition of the Arab Free Press Forum will take place against a backdrop of stalled media freedoms and growing concern for the safety of journalists in the region. Despite the setbacks, since the uprisings and revolutions of 2011 the Arab world has seen new media enterprises and critical writing flourish, efforts that showcase the rich talent and entrepreneurial spirit that is part of a new era of Arab journalism. WAN-IFRA’s Arab Free Press Forum is a unique event that welcomes media professionals from across the Arab world to exchange ideas, experience and best practice at every level of the news industry, with a particular emphasis on the independent press. This edition of the Forum, again being held in Tunis after the success of our 2012 event, will focus on the latest government policies that affect the media throughout the region as well as on independent newspapers that have achieved profitability while upholding editorial independence. Discussions will touch on the role of the traditional media in the new media landscape, best practices for advertising and circulation, and the various initiatives that are truly benefitting the Arab newspaper community. Participants from across the Arab world Each Forum welcomes speakers who are leading publishers and editors from regional newspapers, in addition to contributors from the international media and freedom of expression communities. Together with participants from across the Arab world, they contribute to a stimulating programme designed to explore the present realities and identify the future challenges of the independent Arab press while providing hands-on training and feedback to independent journalists and editors to enable them to effectively leverage emerging opportunities. Confirmed speakers include Fatima El-Issawi from POLIS - the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics; Nabil Wakim, Editor in Chief at LeMonde.fr; Malachy Browne, News Editor at Storyful; Kamel Labidi of Tunisian freedom of expression association Vigilance; Fatima Farag, Founder and Director of Welad Elbalad Media Services Ltd, Egypt; Rana Sabbagh, Executive Director at Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism; Aidan White, Director of the Ethical Journalism Network; Tarek Atia, head of E-MDP in Egypt; and Alan Pearce, leading expert on cyber-security and counter surveillance for journalists.
