The new Brazilian subsidiary trades under the name Koenig & Bauer do Brasil. It follows in the footsteps of KBA Latina SAPI de CV in Mexico City, which was established in August 2012 for the markets in Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. 17045 Germany’s v. Stern‘sche Druckerei with new mailroom equipment Ingenieurbüro mauser-kaiser recently planned and directed a six-month conversion and installation project in Lüneburg without interrupting regular production. The investment in new mailroom equipment marked the second step in a modernisation programme of its heavy production installations for the v. Stern‘schen Druckerei in Lüneburg, which was founded in 1614. While manroland web systems completely overhauled the existing Geoman newspaper press, a new Ferag system was installed to replace the outmoded mailroom equipment. 16901, German wifag extends and optimises presses for publishers in Germany, Switzerland W Germany’s Druckzentrum Südwest in Villingen-Schwenningen, a company belonging to Südwestdeutsche Medienholding, has extended its wifag OF 370 PCU by an additional printing tower. 16906 W The Swiss Mediengruppe Tamedia and wifag are starting a new cooperation in the area of benchmarking newspaper printing plants. The joint benchmarking, which is planned to include other printing plants in Europe and the USA in the future, is intended to guarantee quality assurance and process optimisation independent of location. 17017 Goss Universal presses and Tensor T400BE presses equipped with DCOS Inspection system Turkey’s Özgun Companies Group, which consists of several printing and publishing firms, has equipped two of its existing Goss Universal presses with closed loop register and cut-off control systems. Turkish printer Ada Matbaacilik and the Özgun Group were first out to go live on the web guiding feature on their new Tensor T400BE presses earlier this year. The web guiding feature controls the web lateral position in relation to the center of the former board, and keeps the web centered at all times. The adjustments are made from the reel position in the splicers. 16963 manroland and Germany’s S.E.M. announce new cooperation manroland web systems and the S.E.M. Servicegesellschaft für Elektrik und Mechanik are now cooperation partners offering one-stop maintenance services for web offset customers. A corresponding cooperation agreement was signed during World Publishing Expo 2013 in Berlin that guarantees manroland customers comprehensive maintenance from a single source. A Ferag mailroom system manages product conveying and bundling at full production speed. 16930 W Al-Ahram, Egypt, is updating its Ferag mailroom installations. As part of a retrofitting programme, the three ETR-H inserting drums installed in 1996 were equipped with new components belonging to the MultiSertDrum generation. In a second stage, Multi- Disc technology will replace the buffer store and winding peripherals. 16948 W At the end of 2011, West Ferry Printers in north London opened a new printing centre at a cost of some 65 million pounds. In a second expansion stage, in 2012 the mailroom functionality had inserting added. Technically, this was realised by a Ferag MSD-H inserting drum that is used to mechanically insert individual and advertising supplements. 16973 W Funke Zeitungsdruckereien, Germany, have invested more than 30 million euros in the Druckzentrum Braunschweig. When designing the printing plant, special emphasis was put on energy efficiency and sustainability to be able to produce “state-ofthe art” print objects reliably, economically and quickly, says general manager Klemens Berktold. Ferag satisfies this demand with its modular mailroom solutions. 17024 W As part of a reorganisation of its printing activities, Newsprinters in the U.K. began to consider whether it would be feasible to produce the TV magazine inserted into the Saturday edition of The Sun at its Knowsley site by the coldset offset process in oder to better utilise existing capacities. What Newsprinters lacked for the internal production of the magazine was the possibility to film-wrap the individual copies. After the decision was taken to invest in two Ferag PolyStream lines (see above photo), no more than 16 weeks remained for the installation, operator training and commissioning of the equipment. At the beginning of June 2012 production had to be switched from one week to the next, and within four days, 3.2 million copies of the magazine had to be processed. 17048 www.worldnewspublishingfocus.org ABB orders from Switzerland, Argentina Digital printing in Italy: Bild works with Newsprint Europe The digital newspaper printing company Newsprint Europe (pictured producing another print job) started production of Germany’s Bild newspaper at its site in Rome on 1 October. Distribution of the copies is managed by Messinter, Italy’s largest press product importer, which, like Newsprint Europe, belongs to the IPS group. Messinter already provides distribution services for all press products of Axel Springer and its subsidiary Axel Springer Vertriebsservice (ASV) that are obtainable in Italy. The copies produced digitally by Newsprint Europe are available in southern Italy (Rome and southward). Bild copies for northern Italy continue to be printed in Bologna by the offset process. 17028, German W ABB has announced a major order from Mittelland Zeitungsdruck in Switzerland for a number of production and workflow management systems. The order is only partially in connection with the order placed for a new KBA press for Mittelland Zeitungsdruck. The new press makes it necessary to extend the MPS Production press management system, but the order from Mittelland Zeitungsdruck is much more extensive. 16997 W ABB has also announced an order from La Nacion, the leading Argentinian newspaper house, located in Buenos Aires. The order is for new drives and controls for its wifag OF370 press. La Nacion has selected ABB’s APOS solution to replace the controls and positioning systems on six printing towers and a folder. A retrofit will also be carried out on the drives of these units. 17030
